I moved here from Scotland where my name is actually quite popular. It was a bit of a shock to move here and find my name was almost non-exsistent.

to the last commenter. I used to hate the name Nicola when I was young to mid twenties. I guess cause it was just so strange here (Canada) and nobody knew how to pronounce it. But I love my name now!

I used to hate my name because in Australia they called me either Nicole or NicOla, so I called myself Nicci, and then most people shorten it to Nic after a while!! I used to only be called Nicola by mother when she was mad at me!! Now I'm finally OK with my name and I love being called Nicola. And, my surname is Shine!!! So, this Nicola does kind of Shine!!

The name is a bit more popular in England than in America and i will seriously contemplate jumping on the next person to call me Nicole! People's ignorance of how to say my name has lead me to shorten it to Nik, but i have noticed that i have started to answer to Nicoly, Nicole, Nicole-ah, Nikki, Nike(i have no idea either)
OMG! Cannot believe that there are other Nicola's out there, I have been telling people my whole life, it's NOT Niki... and my sister FINALLY found me a pen with my name on it (so rare...), the amount of Nicole things I had as a kid with the e changed to an a... Hi I'm Nicola from New Zealand! We are all over the place aye! I'm called Nik, it's my preference, I get worried when someone calls me Nicola, means I'm in trouble LOL. Nicola is not a common name, but not un common either in NZ. There were 3 of us in my class at school, all with different spellings, plus a Nicole, so thats when I became just nik :0)
A big welcome to all the new Nicola's! It's great too so many of us out there. My parent's are English, hence the name, but we immigrated to Canada when I was young, so... not a popular name here.

Yes, and we can make everybody take a class to learn how to pronounce it properly! I hate the Cola pronunciation too. "Pepsi" that is a cute one, never heard it before.
I am yet another Nicola though I know a few others. My last name is often mispronounced as well because it's even more uncommon. I was actually supposed to have an "H" in my name like Nicholas but thats not how it ended up on my birth certificate!
Nicola here too (Tucson). I get NiCOla so often I almost don't even notice anymore. When they ask for my name at Starbucks or other places where I don't feel like being faced with a blank stare, I just say, "Nic."
I particularly love when someone finds out my name and says, "Oh! Like...RiiiiiiiiiiiiCOla!!"
